What is an Empath? (Top 5 signs you are an empath)

One of the most powerful, yet often misunderstood, gifts I encounter as a spiritual counselor is the ability of being an empath.

But what exactly is an empath? At its core, an empath is someone who feels the emotions, energy, and sometimes even physical sensations of others as though they are their own. This goes beyond simply being "sensitive". Empaths have a heightened ability to tune into and absorb the feelings of the people and environments around them.

However, there’s more to being an empath than just heightened sensitivity. In fact, I believe that every empath is an old soul, but not every old soul is an empath.

Empathy vs. Empath: A Deeper Connection

While many people can relate to feeling deeply for others or experiencing compassion for the suffering around them, empathy and being an empath are different in profound ways.

An empath not only understands what others feel, but they experience those feelings as though they are their own. This can be overwhelming at times because they are energetically attuned to the emotions and vibrations of others. Whether it’s the joy of a loved one or the sadness of a stranger, empaths absorb these energies deeply. In fact, empaths often struggle to differentiate between their own feelings and the feelings they pick up from others, especially if they haven’t yet learned how to protect their energy.

Why Are All Empaths Old Souls?

The belief that every empath is an old soul relates to the fact that empaths possess a depth of wisdom and understanding that transcends the physical realm. An old soul has lived many lifetimes and has accumulated spiritual knowledge, insight, and a strong sense of intuition. These individuals have a natural connection to the spiritual world and a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of all things, whether they know it or not.

Empaths, by nature, are often drawn to a higher level of spiritual awareness. Their sensitivity to energy and emotions comes from a place of deep soul-level wisdom. They have experienced lifetimes of personal growth, emotional awareness, and spiritual evolution that allow them to perceive the world through a lens that is beyond the ordinary. Their emotional and spiritual depth enables them to tap into others' energies with remarkable clarity, even when those energies are unspoken or hidden.

An old soul's wisdom allows them to process complex emotions with a level of understanding that many others cannot. This is why empaths often feel as though they have an innate sense of responsibility or a calling to help others, whether through healing, counseling, or simply offering a listening ear. The depth of their emotional and spiritual awareness allows them to empathize with the pain and joy of others on a level that transcends human understanding.

Not Every Old Soul is an Empath

While every empath is an old soul, not every old soul is an empath. Old souls are individuals who have lived through many lifetimes and have developed a high level of spiritual wisdom and experience. While this is sometimes debated when one understands that time is an illusion, the age of an old soul is weighed by experience. The amount of experience varies from soul to soul, which we decipher as “time” for an older soul. Not all old souls are deeply in tune with the emotions or energy of others. Some old souls may choose not to engage with the world on an emotional level, preferring instead to observe or stay more detached from the energy around them. While they might have a deep understanding of life and the universe, they may not feel the need to immerse themselves in others' emotional states the way empaths do.

Top 5 Signs you are an Empath

1. You Absorb the Emotions of Others

You often feel other people's emotions as though they are your own. Whether it's joy, sadness, or stress, you pick up on the emotional energy around you, sometimes even without the person saying a word.

2. You Feel Drained in Crowded or Chaotic Environments

Being in large crowds, hectic spaces, or emotionally charged environments can leave you feeling physically and emotionally drained. You may need alone time to recharge after social events.

3. You Have a Strong Intuition

You can sense things that others might not be aware and pick up on energies that are not spoken. Your intuition often guides you when making decisions.

4. You Have a Deep Desire to Help Others

You feel a natural, intense urge to support or heal those around you. You often feel fulfilled when you can help others.

5. You Are Highly Sensitive to Energy and Environments

Not only do you pick up on people’s emotions, but you are also sensitive to the overall energy of spaces. You may feel uncomfortable or unbalanced in certain rooms, buildings, or places where the energy feels off.

The Challenges of Being an Empath

While being an empath is a beautiful gift, it does come with its challenges. The most common struggle empaths face is the constant absorption of other people's emotions. In a world where we are constantly interacting with others, the emotional energy of those around us can become overwhelming.

Empaths often experience:

  • Emotional fatigue: Constantly absorbing other people’s feelings can lead to exhaustion, confusion, and emotional burnout.

  • Difficulty setting boundaries: Empaths tend to be natural healers, and they often struggle with saying no to others. This can lead to taking on too much emotional baggage from people who are in need.

  • Sensitivity to environments: Empaths are highly sensitive not just to people, but to their surroundings. Crowded places, chaotic environments, or emotionally charged spaces can feel overwhelming and draining.

This is why it’s so important for empaths to learn how to protect their energy and set healthy boundaries, both emotionally and physically. Practices such as grounding, meditation, and learning to create energetic shields can help empaths manage their sensitivities and maintain balance in their lives.

How Empaths Can Harness Their Gift for Healing

Being an empath is not just about feeling others’ emotions, it’s about using that sensitivity as a tool for healing and growth. When empaths learn to manage their gift, they can use it to:

  1. Offer deep healing to others: By tuning into the emotional needs of others, empaths can offer intuitive guidance, support, and healing that is profoundly transformative.

  2. Create meaningful connections: Empaths are able to form deep, meaningful relationships because they understand the emotional needs of others on a soul level. Their capacity for compassion allows them to create authentic bonds that nourish both themselves and others.

  3. Expand their spiritual growth: By embracing their sensitivity and connecting with their intuition, empaths can tap into the vast spiritual wisdom within them. This allows them to grow spiritually and align with their higher purpose in life.
